Position Name: Culturally Positive Parenting Support Counselor

Functional Statement

CCIS requires a Culturally Positive Parenting Support Counselor in the CCIS Parent Link Centre to develop and implement a Culturally Positive Parenting Program. This program will assist Newcomers and their families through the acculturation and resettlement process by offering culturally appropriate parenting programs (in first language and English) that introduce an understanding of the norms and expectations of parenting support and parent roles in Canada.

Flexibility is necessary as this position requires some evenings and/or weekend work.

Position Description

Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Culturally Positive Parenting Support Counselor provides Culturally Positive Parenting Support in a second language and in English in the form of information, education and awareness sessions. Sessions are delivered directly to communities, families, and individuals and will be provided in both group and one-on-one settings.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement cross-cultural parenting workshop curriculum
  • Provide parenting support to families in their first language
  • Case Management including individualized support and follow up
  • Assess all children and families for special needs/concerns and risk factors
  • Provide information to all families on a range of topics, including Medical system, Health Promotion, Climate appropriate clothing, Food and nutrition, Education system, prenatal care, Child Welfare, Recreation, etc.
  • Connect families with relevant community support services
  • Open and maintain clients’ records and address clients’ needs
  • Provide cultural interpretation for families and language translation service to clients and other mainstream agencies
  • Maintain promising practices through continual learning and development
  • Participate in relevant Triple P training and education as determined by senior staff
  • Actively participate in the evaluation of the program
  • Demonstrate an interest in and the ability to work with Newcomers
  • Engage Newcomer parents and children in interactive activities and events
  • Undertake administrative duties relative to the efficient and effective operation of the division as required. These include, but are not limited to:
    • Maintain client file recording in an appropriate and accurate manner
    • Collect, maintain and report statistical data
    • Develop and administer program evaluation system
    • Submit monthly statistical reports and evaluations to the supervisor

Qualifications

  • Degree and/or related experience in Social Services
  • Fluency in English and another language
  • An understanding and appreciation of the service needs of the various community and ethno-cultural groups
  • Working knowledge or lived experience of settlement and integration processes
  • A demonstrated positive attitude, willingness to take initiative, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • An interest in and the ability to work with Newcomers and mainstream agencies
  • ASQ and ASQSE child development training, or willing to train
  • The ability to engage Newcomer parents and children in activities and events
  • Knowledge/experience with cross-cultural communication and cultural diversity
  • Well-developed knowledge of social services systems in Calgary
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Must be able to work flexible hours
  • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license
