The Refugee Child Enhanced Integration Project (RCEIP) is designed to specifically support refugee children and youth in the school system. Extra support is provided for children to deal with any resettlement issues which may have an impact on their academic performance.

By addressing issues such as; social and peer relations, nutrition, individual development, recreation, and language acquisition, the project works to reduce stress in children and allow them to focus on, and excel in their academic performance. Support services are provided to any Government Assisted Refugee children and youth between the ages of 6-15 that are assigned to the Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre.

RCEIP performs the following activities:

We believe that refugee children will be as successful as any of us when given the right support and services.

  • Conduct periodic assessments to identify needs of refugee children and youth.
  • Offer appropriate referrals to other child and youth serving programs.
  • Serve as an effective communication bridge and liaise between parents and teachers to ease the school adjustment.
  • Provide orientation and information sessions to equip refugee families with the necessary tools and knowledge to help them better respond to their integration challenges.
  • Organize monthly social events to increase access and awareness of recreational and educational activities.
  • Offer homework clubs in various locations in the city.
  • Provide mentoring opportunities (Buddy Match) at schools to help newly arrived refugee students feel welcomed and supported.
  • Offer to lend laptops and graphic calculators to help refugee students with school assignment and projects.
  • Connect refugee children/youth to social and educational activities in the community.
