|Shift:||weekly commitment with flexible hours|
|Duration:||6 months to 1 year|
The Survivors of Torture/SOT Youth & Family Project needs caring and committed volunteers like you! You will be providing support for refugees that have suffered torture or traumatic experiences related to torture. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about different cultures, and to improve your cultural sensitivity and communication skills.
Volunteers will provide practical & social support by answering resettlement questions and concerns, and helping refugees to understand Canadian culture. Specifically, volunteers will assist refugee clients to navigate the public transportation, healthcare and education systems. Other activities volunteers do with clients may include family barbeques, recreation activities and visiting local attractions.
Each volunteer or group of volunteers is connected with an individual or family based on the assigned client and your preferences. Factors to be considered include volunteers’ skills, hobbies, location in Calgary and availabilities. Volunteers are expected to visit their assigned families once a week, for 6 months to 1 year.
All applicants are subjected to a screening process, and training will be provided on cross-cultural interaction, settlement processes and practical mentorship support. Ongoing supervision, guidance, and professional development opportunities will be provided.
