Job Description

Volunteer Language Assistants will be providing support services for CCIS staff and clients. Language Assistants play a crucial role in bridging non-English speaking clients to essential services within and outside of CCIS.

Time Commitment and Location

Services are completely client based and will be requested as needed. Volunteers have the right to decline any appointment requests they are uncomfortable to take on.
Volunteers should be able to travel to different CCIS offices and service locations within Calgary. Occasional travel to nearby cities (Cochrane, Airdrie, Chestermere, and Okotoks) may be requested but are not obligatory.

Volunteers should be prepared for various situations, including but not limited to client assessments, information sessions, basic medical and legal appointments, and home visits. Volunteers should be available during weekday office hours, though services may be requested on weekends and evenings. This expected time commitment is a minimum of 4 hours per week for three months.

Benefits to Volunteers

Basic training on interpretation techniques and professional communication will be provided, with additional support during each appointment. Volunteers will be able to gain satisfaction through helping a new immigrants and refugees access essential services which he or she may not be able to access otherwise. References can be provided upon completing a minimum of 20 hours, at the discretion of the volunteer resources coordinator.

• Kurdish (Kurmanji)
• Tigrinya, Oromo
• Arabic
• Spanish

Skills / Qualifications:

Qualifications

• Fluency in English (CLB 6 or higher)
• Fluency in a language other than English
• Excellent and professional communication skills
• Willing to listen, reflect on feedback and respond appropriately
• Respectful, open minded and objective
• Experience with customer service and/or social service preferred
• Police security clearance
• Understanding and compliance with CCIS policies
• Attendance at general training and program specific trainings
